Hopsewee Plantation - Cellar to Attic Guided Tour
The beautiful Hopsewee Plantation overlooks the North Santee River and the old rice fields that produced the wealth of the Lynch, Hume and Lucas families for almost 150 years. Not as large as the antebellum cotton plantation houses, this colonial house still has much of the original woodwork and window glass, and has never been enlarged since its construction in the mid-18th century.
Still a private residence, the house is furnished with the 18th and 19th century family heirlooms of the present owners, the Beattie's, who can usually be found around the plantation and look forward to meeting with guests. Mrs. Beattie is often in the Tea Room, cooking up another delicious dish, and Mr. Beattie is busy working on various projects around the grounds.
During your 1-hour guided tour you will have the opportunity to:
- Visit each room of the house, from attic to cellar, as your tour guide shares the rich history of Hopsewee, its previous owners, and the slaves who lived and worked on the plantation.
- Spend time on the ground, viewing the two original slave cabins.
- Enjoy the natural beauty of the area and its moss draped oak tree and the majestic Santee River flowing by.
After your tour, enjoy our Southern Tea or a delicious lunch in the River Oak Cottage Tea Room. Built by the Beattie's in 2008, the team room is ranked in the top three tea rooms in South Carolina. While the cost of the lunch or tea is not included in the ticket price, all guests receive a $2 credit to the tea room for purchasing their tickets in advance.
