The History at Hopsewee Plantation

Built circa 1740, some 40 years before the American Revolutionary War, Hopsewee Plantation was one of the South’s major rice plantations. It’s also the birthplace of Thomas Lynch, Jr., one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

Southern History and Great Food

The grounds of the home are hauntingly beautiful and transport you to a time long, long ago. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and very welcoming. The tour of the home was very informative and interesting and I want to go back and tour the new museum on the grounds. Do not, repeat, do not miss out on lunch or tea at the River Oak Cottage Tea Room. The food is excellent and the atmosphere is relaxing and casual.

Would highly recommend!

My family and I did the museum/house combo tour. It took us around 2-2.5 hours. Our guide was very knowledge and created a good overall sense of what it must have been like during that time period for all. She was very neutral and non biased and stated facts. I would highly recommend!

Great tour of Hopsewee

We enjoyed the tour of the Hopsewee Plantation house. Yancy was our guide, and he was knowledgeable on many things, and able to answer just about anything. The tour shared about the people that lived there and the aspects of the building itself that made it unique. The grounds were beautiful to walk around with plenty of moss-draped live oaks. Be sure to bring bug spray. We did not get to view the museum or see anything else on the property due to time limits on our end, but it looked inviting and would have been nice to explore it more. All of the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful.

Very Informative

We did the combination house and museum tours. Our house guide, Yancy, gave the tour from a perspective of how hard it was to clear the swamp. Vennie, the museum guide explained the rice fields very well. The new museum was done well and focused on rice farming at Hopsewee. The owners of the property have a vision to tell an accurate story of the plantation.

Ladies Luncheon

We had a group of approximately 35 women. We had 4 delicious menu items to choose from ahead of time. The food was excellent. The service was great! The ambience of the Tea House was lovely. The owner/hostess was very gracious and told us about how the Tea House came to be. The whole experience was wonderful!!

Birthday Tea Party

My husband and I took a friend from out of state to celebrate her birthday at the River Oak Cottage Tea Room. We all had a wonderful time. The food was delicious. The service was attentive and friendly. We met the owner Raejean. She took time to talk to us about the recipes that she developed for the Tea Room. Our friend said it was and unforgettable birthday celebration.
