Travel Back in Time for this Southern Plantation House Tour
Built circa 1740, some 40 years before the American Revolutionary War, Hopsewee Plantation was one of the South’s major rice plantations and the birthplace of Thomas Lynch, Jr., one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
The house is furnished with 18th and 19th century antiques, has much of the original woodwork and glass. Now privately owned, the tour of this National Historic Landmark includes stories of the patriots and planters who owned Hopsewee and the enslaved people who worked and lived at Hopsewee.

After your tour, enjoy our Southern Tea or a delicious lunch in the River Oak Cottage Tea Room. Built by the Beatties in 2008, the tea room was featured in Teatime Magazine in 2024.
Guests can also choose to get guaranteed seating in the tea room on the day of their tour along with their tickets. The cost of lunch or tea is not included in the ticket price.

While we do welcome photography of the historic house exterior and plantation grounds and gardens, taking pictures or videos of any kind inside the house or of the tour itself is not permitted at any point. Lunch and tea in the tea room is not included, but we encourage all guests to stop by before or after the tour. Reservations are recommended.

• The Hopsewee house tour includes seven steps to be navigated for entry to the house. There is a full flight of stairs inside to be navigated for the upstairs part of the tour. Handrails are available for both sets of stairs. If you have accessibility concerns, please call us at (843) 546-7891. You may also add a note to us when you book your tickets.
