Travel Back in Time for this Southern Plantation House Tour

Built circa 1740, some 40 years before the American Revolutionary War, Hopsewee Plantation was one of the South’s major rice plantations and the birthplace of Thomas Lynch, Jr., one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

The house is furnished with 18th and 19th century antiques, has much of the original woodwork and glass. Now privately owned, the tour of this National Historic Landmark includes stories of the patriots and planters who owned Hopsewee and the enslaved people who worked and lived at Hopsewee.

Key points of interest:

• Learn about the rich history of Hopsewee, its previous families as well as its current owners, the Beatties, and the enslaved who lived and worked on the plantation
• Hear about the history of Lowcountry rice plantations of the early 18th century
• Explore the home from room to room and its features like wide center halls, hand-carved molding and random-width heart-pine floors.
• Enjoy the natural beauty of the area and its moss-draped trees and the majestic Santee River flowing by

After your tour, enjoy our Southern Tea or a delicious lunch in the River Oak Cottage Tea Room. Built by the Beatties in 2008, the tea room was featured in Teatime Magazine in 2024.

Guests can also choose to get guaranteed seating in the tea room on the day of their tour along with their tickets. The cost of lunch or tea is not included in the ticket price.
